On Thursday, Mykola Tomenko, Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, opened the meeting of the Committee on Parliamentary Liaison between Ukraine and the EU. He declared that impartial unbiased assessment of the elections by the European Parliament was essential for the future of Ukrainian democracy.

As reported, the European Parliament postponed adoption of the resolution on Ukraine in the framework of the local elections. However, M. Tomenko hopes that this resolution on the local elections in Ukraine "would be objective and realistic, not a formal one." "If it fails to reflect objectively the situation observed during the local elections, the next parliamentary elections, that may be held under the mixed system, might not correspond to the European standards", M. Tomenko admitted.

M. Tomenko also focused attention on the adoption of the action plan on the implementation of a visa-free regime between Ukraine and the EU, facilitation of negotiations concerning a free trade zone between Ukraine and the EU, and cooperation in the sphere of justice, freedom and security.
